The tiny island of Angistri is part of the Saronic Island group lying to the south of Athens and very close to the Peloponnese mainland. The self catering holiday villas that Pretty Greek Villas has chosen on Aegina are situated in one of Angistri's most beautiful hamlets in the hills above the main town of Skala.

Angistri is a quiet, traditional island only 4 kms from Aegina. The island is an undiscovered gem with pretty coves and fragrant pine forests and is often considered the best kept secret of the Saronic Islands which can easily be explored from Angistri.

You may just want to relax in beautiful surroundings whilst on holiday in your Greek villa. However, Angistri has some pleasures to offer.

How to Get There

The nearest airport is Athens International Airport. From there, you can take a taxi or the E96 Airport bus to the Port of Pireaus. The airport bus leaves every 15 mins from the airport bus stand directly outside the Arrivals Hall. From Pireaus, you take a Flying Dolphin or Catamaran to the island of Aegina (approx 30 mins) and then a short ferry or taxi ride to the island of Angistri. Some ferries go from Pireaus directly.

Pretty Good Beaches

The sea around Angistri is absolutely crystalline and dolphins can sometimes be seen. There are some very pretty coves and beaches to explore.

Skala Beach
This is the main town beach and is sandy with a shallow shelf making it popular with families.

Marisa Beach
This delightful rocky cove with sparkling water is located just behind the village of Limeraria with its golden domed church.

Marghisa Beach & Bariana Beach
These are two very secluded beaches. A 10 min walk from the pine shaded path at St Nikolaos Cemetry leads to the seaside.

Megalochori Beach, Aponissos Beach, Drasseses Beach, Xekofti Beach and Dragonera Beach
All quiet, beautiful beaches surrounded by nature.

Walks
When you are looking for something more than lying at the beach, the interior of the island with its fragrant pine forests is a perfect walker's paradise especially in springtime.

A good day's walk is to start at Skala and walk all the way across the island to Limenaria and to the deserted beach of Aponissos.

There are also many beautiful tracks in the pine forested interior of the island with spectacular views.

A nice way to visit the many coves of Angistri is to charter a boat.

Aegina by boat
Aegina is only 4 kms from Angistri and there are regular ferries between each island as well as a 24 hour water taxi service. Aegina is one of the few islands that still encapsulates all that Greeks love about their own country. Spetses by Flying Cat
The island of Spetses with its pine-cloaked hills, sandy coves, splendid old harbour and aristocratic heritage can be visited from Aegina, the neighbouring island to Angistri. Hydra by Flying Cat

Peloponnese mainland by ferry
There are regular ferries and water taxis from Angistri to the Peloponnese mainland. In high season, there is a ferry service to Ancient Epidavros each evening for the summer arts festival held at the ancient amphitheatre. The Peloponnese is where most of the major archaelogical sites are located and the beautiful Venetian town of Nafplion can be explored.

Pretty Greek Festivals

Throughout Greece, every island and place has its share of festivals. A religious ceremony is held in the local church followed by eating, drinking, dancing and fireworks until dawn. Angistri has its fair share of the fun.

Celebrated all over Greece, this ceremony is in honour of the Virgin Mary.

Sitting at one of the local tavernas and enjoying an ouzo and some freshly prepared traditional Greek mezedes, you will feel as if you have stepped back in time to an era before tourism began.

Mrs Alexandra runs this fish restaurant located in the main town of Skala. There are other good fish tavernas in Skala located near the church by the beach.

This excellent taverna is in the village of Milos next to the harbour

Limenaria Taverna
Delicious traditional food at this vibrant taverna in Limenaria overlooking the golden-domed church.

Pretty Greek Bars

The Aquarias Bar, Skala
This is possibly the most well known bar on Angistri situated near the beach at Skala.

Copa Cobana Bar, Skala
Good atmosphere at this beach front bar which seems popular with locals.

Hook Bar
Fantastic setting for a bar surrounded by the sea. A definite must visit!

If you are in need of some 'retail therapy', then you could not do better than hop on a ferry and take a quick connection over to Aegina where there are some really chic shops.
