Alonissos

Sporades

Of outstanding natural beauty is the protected marine park between Alonissos and Peristera Island which is a breeding ground for the rare Monk seal and a paradise for snorkeling and diving. The old town of Alonissos, Hora, perched on top of the hillside with its bird's eye view over the bay, is utterly charming with old stone houses and winding streets full of colour. The picturesque fishing village of Steni Vala offers sleepy, unhurried charm where fishermen mend their nets by the quay and the fish tavernas offer just-caught fish from their caique boats.

Tassia's Cooking Taverna

Steni Vala

One cannot miss the famous lobster spaghetti dish of Kyria Tasia in her taverna at Steni Vala. Her sister Soultana has the café next door and her deserts are wonderful.

Shopping

The nearest (and biggest) commercial centre on the island is the port of Patitiri 4kms from the villa. Here you’ll find the bank, post office, pharmacy, several rent a car/bike/boat places, 3 supermarkets, a baker’s shop, fantastic butchers, a fishmonger, a couple of fruit and veg shops and a couple of take away shops. Opening hours are 8am – 2pm and 5pm to 10pm every day during high season. As there is no central market, the butchers, fishmongers, bakers and fruit & veg shops not only supply the domestic consumer but also all the restaurants on the island. For this reason, it’s a good idea to try to avoid their immediate opening hours as this is when they concentrate on the wholesale bulk orders for other trade and you could be waiting a while. Particularly in the butchers, if you can’t see what you want, ASK for it – because they usually have what you’re looking for but tucked away in a cold room.

Ta Kalamakia Fish Taverna

Pretty local beaches

Pretty good things to do

Alonissos Town (Hora)

This is a delightful town that was damaged in the 1965 earthquake but has been beautifully restored. Enjoy wandering along the little streets and alleyways where you will find some excellent cafes and tavernas as well as some artistic shops.

Patitiri Town

Following the 1965 earthquake, Patiri became the main town of the island. Although the buildings are rather ugly, it does have a certain bustling charm being the port of the island and with some good, traditional tavernas and some shops selling some beautiful, artistic pieces. The bakery sells delicious pastries.

Steni Vala Village

Probably one of the most picturesque fishing villages in the Sporades. A narrow, fjord--like inlet leads into the harbour where there are some excellent fish tavernas and small shops. The Monk Seal Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre is housed in a small hut on the beach.

National Marine Park of Alonissos

An area of outstanding natural beauty rich in marine life and being the breeding ground for the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus Monachus). This is one of the rarest animals in Europe with only about 800 surviving members worldwide. The marine park comprises of Alonissos and six smaller islands as well as some rocky outcrops. Additionally, it is an important breeding ground for many species of birds, fish, reptiles and mammals.

The Blue Cave

Located on the north eastern side of Alonissos between the remote beaches of Strovili and Lalarias, a few km north of Agios Dimitrios village. Excursion boats leave daily from Patitiri. The water around the Blue Cave is so clear that the wild rocks around dazzle and are reflected in them.

Peristera Island

With its sandy coves, limpid waters and the remains of an old castle this is a lovely island to explore and is one of the closest to Alonissos.

Kyra Panagia Island

A taxi boat from Patitiri port leaves for this island which is owned by the monks of Mount Athos and has 2 beautiful but partially ruined monasteries on it.

Gioura Island

On this islet is a stalactite cave known as the Cyclops’s Cave reputed to be the cave where Odysseus was imprisoned by Polyphemus (one of the most famous Cyclops), son of Poseidon. A rare species of wild goat live on Yioura, as well as many rare plants.

Psathoura Island

On this islet is the brightest and tallest lighthouse in the Aegean as well as the remains of a submerged ancient town believed, by some, to be the ancient Alonissos.

Skatzoura Island

This islet has beautiful beaches, one monastery with guest accommodation and a few shepherds still with flocks that graze on its hillsides.

Papous Island

It is a small islet with a lovely church and situated between Kyra Panagia and Yioura.

Kostas and Angela Mavrikis Museum

Located in Patitiri, this is a privately owned museum displaying local works of art along with items from the wine--making industry and traditions of Alonissos. Among the exhibits you will find traditional costumes, war memorabilia and artifacts by artisans of the island.

Church of Christ

his church is a lovely tiny little church in the old ‘Hora’ and one of the few that survived the earthquake.

Agios Athanasios church

This church stands within the fortress of the Old Alonissos (Hora), another survivor from the disastrous earthquake of 1965. It was built the same period as the Church of Christ. The church houses a beautiful icon dating from the 18th century.

Agios Nikolas church

Although this is a modern church built on the foundations of an older church, there are some fine mid 17th Century icons on display here

Scuba Diving

PADI courses are available on Alonissos.
Greece is among the richest country in ship wrecks dating as far back as the 5th century B.C. More specifically the area around Skopelos, Alonissos and the Marine park have the second largest concentration of ancient and Middle Ages sea wrecks in the world. Many shipwrecks have been discovered with the most famous being that off the coast of Peristera island across Alonissos where the findings are stunning.
The National Marine Park, one of the best preserved marine ecosystems in the Med, is an excellent opportunity to dive into crystal clear waters of significant importance to our European and world heritage.

Walking

Alonissos is a bird spotter’s paradise. On the walks and old mule paths that criss-- cross the island you will experience hillsides carpeted in pungent herbs and many species of wild flower and fauna. On a clear day you can see Mountain Athos,
Mount Olympos, Pilion, Evia, Skyros and Skopelos.

Pretty important

Security

thankfully Alonissos suffers virtually no crime but please be sure to shut windows/doors when going out to avoid unwanted visits from other members of the animal kingdom. The shutters are lockable from the inside. There is little need to shut both the shutters and the interior doors/windows – one or the other will usually do.

Cleaning Schedule

cleaners come twice a week. Their duties are to clean the property and change the beds and towels. To help them undertake this service swiftly and efficiently it would be helpful if you should keep the villa reasonably tidy.

Breakages

please report any breakages to the cleaners who are responsible for repairs and replacements. You may be asked to cover the cost of replacement items.

Toilets

Unfortunately the main drainage services on the island aren’t yet up to the standards of some other European countries, so please don’t throw toilet paper/sanitary items/cotton buds/wet wipes/disposable nappies down them but use the bins provided.

Air-conditioning

please keep doors and windows shut when the air-conditioning is running. Please turn off when you leave the villa for the day. The villa will cool down quickly once you turn on again when you return.

Pool

there is a pool attendant who visit on a regular basis to ensure that the pool is clean and that the chlorine levels are adequate.

Water

please use bottled water. Tap water is fine for cooking and brushing teeth. As usual, please conserve water whenever possible.

Climate

Alonissos boasts fantastic, endless sunny and hot days. The afternoons are the hottest which is why everywhere closes between 2pm – 5pm for a siesta. Beware the odd ‘inclement’ day when it’s windy and slightly cloudy – these are the days you’ll burn yourself raw. It’s advisable to stay out of the sun during the afternoon and you’ll still get a good tan. (If you get sunburn, try natural yoghurt as an alternative to after sun – it takes all the heat out of the burn.) When it rains, it’s a downpour – but only for a short time. The sun will be on the horizon quicker than you know it.

Checking Out

Check out is normally 10am on the day of departure unless alternative prior arrangements have been made. If you leave before the caretaker arrives, just leave the keys on the kitchen work-surface.
