Located in the small, sleepy village of Mesagros, 10 kms north of Aegina town is the beautifully restored old stone house of a renowned Greek artist.

Walking distance to a traditional taverna and only 2 kms to the sea, and set in the shadow of the ancient temple of Naos Atheas is this beautiful labyrinth created out of old stone and surrounded by a Mediterranean garden. Perfect little ‘corners’ await to be discovered and explored. This is the essence of Greek island life. A fresh breeze rustles through the trees and the birds whistle and tweet their enchanting melodies. The atmosphere is one of serenity and tranquility.

Villa Atelier comprises two houses both consisting of different cottage style dwellings containing living and sleeping areas honed out of local stone.

The main house is L shaped and every door opens onto a beautiful courtyard. It is shaded by an old wooden pergola clad in indigenous plants. An old stone bbq is conveniently placed close to a large wooden table which can seat 10 - 12 guests and is a perfect spot for al fresco dining. There is a large metal bell-shaped lamp suspended above, perfect for dinner parties and conversation running late into the night.

Entering the main house it is immediately apparent that the property has been created detail by detail over time. Small doorways surrounded by stone lead from one room to the other and each and every nook offers a new discovery; an iron bench tarnished by the years, a bust carved out of a hunk of marble, comfortable corners to sit and read, with a painting by the artist adorning each wall.

The kitchen is cottage-style offering all modern appliances and beautifully decorated in shades of green. Doors lead onto the outside L shaped courtyard which is convenient for serving up culinary delights. Next to the kitchen is an office/living area with comfortable built-in seating and a desk in the corner. This small and quirky space leads to the other rooms in the main house.

Downstairs is a double bedroom which has the use of a bathroom situated next to the kitchen, and upstairs is a labyrinth of three rooms - a large bedroom with queen-sized bed and a single bed in the corner, and a second bedroom with single bed, and with a large bathroom between them. French doors lead to a balcony which wraps around the upper level of the building. It is a perfect place to sip away on an ouzo, play backgammon or simply chat to a friend. A set of stone steps conveniently lead back down to the L shaped courtyard.

Back in the office/living area, a stone archway with door leads into a large living room with huge windows at one end. This is where the artist has created some of his finest works and many of them hang on the walls. An old stone fireplace with a freshly painted fresco and surrounded by comfortable sofas is the heart of this wonderful home.

From the outside of the property, three bedrooms face onto the L shaped courtyard.

The first is the master bedroom accessed by four old stone steps where wonderful paintings of lovers from the past are displayed above the bed. There is a double bed with separate dressing room as well as en-suite bathroom with WC and shower.

The second and third bedrooms are interconnecting and would be perfect for a family of four. A double bedroom leads to a dressing room with wardrobes painted in grey running the length of the wall. A simple bathroom with WC is accessed from the dressing room area as is a second bedroom with two single beds.

Walking on, through mature gardens of palms and ancient pines, past the heady scents of indigenous shrubs is the second house. It contains two double bedrooms, both with ensuite facilities and a large open plan living room and kitchen. Outside is a large dining area, BBQ and old stone sink which is shaded by an old wooden pergola suspended above stone columns.

At the front of the building is the swimming pool (10m x 4m) surrounded by colourful flowers and plants. At one end is a shaded area for sitting, dining and relaxing, and surrounding the pool is a variety of sun-loungers and comfortable seating.

Atelier is one of the most interesting properties in our collection. Unique in every way yet remaining comfortable, practical and perfect for large family gatherings.

Reviews

Lucy B. arrived 14th July 2019

We are back from our lovely time on Aegina which we really really
enjoyed. We loved the house - it's a bit like a Greek version of our house so we felt very comfortable and relaxed. Please pass on our thanks to the owner.
If you want any feedback, pls let me know. And thank you so much for organising the food on our arrival, it was very very welcomed as we really didn't want to go out after a long day of travel. We went to the taverna up the road several times - absolutely delicious.
We did quite a bit of touring round the island finding beaches, seeing
the temple, medieval village etc but mainly were happy reading in the sun (shade!)
And the car hire worked brilliantly.

Best wishes
Lucy
