This former working farmhouse brims with history and character, now fully restored with private pool

Villa Ambelia is a newly renovated cottage. Years ago, the land surrounding the property was a large vineyard (‘ambelia’), producing the fine wines for which Skopelos was justly famous. 

A feeling of the island’s history is immediately evident when entering the cottage. Various original tools and utensils have been used to decorate its interior. These were all found near the house and lovingly restored and displayed as a testimony to its history as a working farmhouse.

The lower level has a dining room with low wooden ceilings and large table for family gatherings. The furnishings are comfortable and in an island country style. Off of the dining room is a bedroom with two single beds and a spacious w/c shower room. An open doorway at the opposite end leads to the brand new country kitchen, which is equipped with all modern conveniences. 

Continuing around the L-shaped design of the house, an open doorway leads to a spacious living room, which has a large fireplace and a sitting area with two Skopelitian sofas and comfortable chairs. Huge glass doors lead to the terrace. This large terrace is surrounded by flowers and trees and has a path leading to the private swimming pool. 

The master bedroom is reached by an outside stone stairway and is an example of the original country-style bedrooms found in this type of cottage. The raw wood floors, fireplace and enormous bed were a must during the days when families spent days in the countryside, cut off from civilisation. The decor is simple and comfortable. The bed runs along one entire wall of the room and is covered with an immense mattress, which was intended to provide sleeping space for all the family together during olive or fruit picking season. The addition of a single bed is perfect for a younger child to sleep in with parents. The WC/shower room is situated on the same landing but with a separate outside entrance.

Outside, Villa Ambelia has a wonderful patio shaded by a huge, old oak tree. The patio has plenty of atmosphere and space for outdoor living with sun lounges and a table and chairs for dining al-fresco. A path leads from this terrace to the private swimming pool, set amongst the natural trees and grounds. There are still the remains, perfectly intact, of the original stone-built corn mill with its circular form making a picturesque place to sit and relax today. Stairs from the terrace lead to the beautiful small chapel of Panagitsa dating from 1932, which sits on the remains of a much older church. 

Villa Ambelia, surrounded by pine forests, is set in the countryside about 1 km off the main road that runs the length of the island. A ten-minute drive brings you to some of the islands best beaches in the area around Panormos. Mountains covered in pine forests, contrasting with the bright blue sea surround these lovely, white shingle beaches. At Panormos Beach the waterfront is lined with typical tavernas specialising in fresh local seafood and the mini-market carries most of your essentials. Alternatively, Skopelos town is approximately 20 minutes by car and here you will find a full array of shops, restaurants and cafes. Villa Ambelia is in a wonderful area for walking and has numerous paths and dirt tracks in the surrounding hillside to suit everyone.

Villa Ambelia is great for couples wanting a holiday in the Greek countryside with the privacy of their own swimming pool. Families too can enjoy the peace and nature with plenty of space to explore, but be close enough to the islands best beaches and restaurants.
