Set up high above Hydra Town but with hardly any steps to climb, Persephone House is situated in a rural part of the island. Surrounded by fields and with spectacular views across the harbour this is a wonderful retreat to while away many a summer day.

Persephone House commands a spectacular view across the hills of Hydra to the harbour below. It is one of the more accessible properties on the island with the least amount of steps to climb. A paved road leads up from the harbour past the winter resting place for the island’s resident donkeys. A short mule track skirts along the top of the hill and there before you is a handsome stone house set in a large courtyard garden.

The wrought-iron garden gate leads into a lovely sanctuary with vine-covered pergola, terraced walls covered in a profusion of rosemary and lavender punctuated by pomegranate and lemon trees. The swimming pool and terrace at the end of the garden affords a bird’s eye view of Hydra harbour and bay, right out across to the folds of the Peloponnese mountains beyond.

Thick stone steps lead up to the front door. There is a large, cool farmhouse style kitchen complete with its original old cistern. Terracotta floors and the traditional pine-scrubbed kitchen table add a homely rustic feel. The kitchen leads directly through to the living room which is furnished traditionally. At the far end of the living room is a double bedroom with doors leading out onto the garden. To the other side of the living room is a bathroom and unusually for Hydra, with hip bath and shower.

To reach the upper level, there is a glass and wooden doorway from the living room to an internal staircase. This can be completely closed off for those who want to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the upper level. Here, the original long ‘virani’ room running the length of the entire house, typical of traditional Hydriot houses, has been retained. The ‘virani’ has a living area with sofa, an old marble sink in one corner and a double bed at the far side. Doors lead out onto a very large terrace with wonderful views of the remote and peaceful hills of Hydra as well as a fine view of the perfect horse-shoe shaped harbour.

This is a solid, well-built traditional stone house that is furnished throughout in a simple and honest way with the minimum amount of fuss.

Persephone House is ideal for guests wanting to enjoy a traditional Hydriot house, enfolded in the stillness of the countryside and yet with easy access to the hustle and bustle of the old town and harbour.
