Andros

Quintessential Andros - artistic villa set in lush green hillside village close to Chora - the main town of the island

View Gallery

Fresh water springs, streams and lush vegetation characterise this artistic stone villa set in the hills above Chora – Andros Town.

From the private parking just below the villa, steps wend their way up through the coolness of the garden to the house. The main entrance leads to an indoor dining area with double doors to the left opening onto the living room. French windows lead out to the main terrace with outdoor dining area. Beyond the indoor dining area is a stylish and well equipped kitchen. There is a lightness and simplicity in the styling with grey/charcoal paintwork contrasting with brilliant modern art. The furnishings are comfortable, contemporary, artistic and fun.

On this level there are two bedrooms which can accommodate 3 guests:

Close to the living room, traditional thick-cut steps in ox-blood red lead to a lovely double bedroom characterised by simple paintwork and a colourful contemporary wall hanging, with metre-thick stone walls and a sense of coolness and tranquillity. There is a separate ‘hammam’ style bathroom in grey ‘tsimentagonia’ typical of the Cyclades with generous walk-in shower area surrounded by softly-sculpted sides for sitting and relaxing.

The second bedroom is accessed via some steps just outside the kitchen – an older child or teenager would love this characterful space. In older Greek houses, the upper levels were often accessed through a large trap-door accessed by stone steps cut into the walls. This traditional feature has been preserved and in the space above is a delightful single bedroom – airy and comfortable. Doors lead to a verandah with superb views over the countryside to the sea. (This bedroom is not suitable for small children since the verandah is not protected by railings, though the verandah door can be locked).

Steps from outside the kitchen lead down to the lower level which also accommodates 3 guests:

The lower level is a marvellous cave-like labyrinth of rooms with thick stone walls and featuring the original slate ceilings and old wooden beams that are hundreds of years old. A few steps lead up to a ‘grotto’ style bedroom with double/twin beds that is immensely cool and open to the rest of the space (please note ceilings in this bedroom are very low). Down the steps is a dressing room with beautiful antique dresser and plenty of space for clothes. Beyond is a separate bathroom with shower and WC, and continuing along is a single bedroom/study. Finally, you come to a stunning living room perfect for its coolness in the height of the summer with comfortable chairs set around a fire-place and a beautiful view from the window over the countryside. Doors lead straight out onto the pool terrace and garden.

The horizon pool has glorious views over the countryside to the sea, with teak sun-deck and sun-loungers, and a separate ‘chill-out’ lounge area, and outdoor dining area with plenty of shade from the mature trees that surround the terrace. A special feature is the old cistern that feeds the swimming pool with fresh water – it’s a wonderfully cool place to sit dipping your toes in the water or for children to splash about and play.

The main outdoor dining terrace is above outside the main entrance to the house. So from the pool area, you walk up the steps where you find a large outdoor dining area featuring an unusual table made of shutters with great views right over the countryside to Chora and the sea. On this terrace there are also deck chairs and a perfectly positioned hammock.

The villa has all the usual modern facilities that you would expect such as WIFI, large TV, music system, dish washer, washing machine etc. The villa is naturally cool due to its thick stone walls and position surrounded by lush greenery and mountain streams. Air-conditioning is therefore not needed though fans are provided.

From the property, you can walk down some ancient flag-stone steps to the local taverna which is excellent. The property is situated in the village of Menites renowned for its abundance of water and greenery with its beautiful old village Springs. The village is a trekker’s paradise with ancient mule paths into the hills and paved footpaths that have been impeccably preserved. Chora – the main town of the island – is only 6kms away with its excellent modern art museum, and an array of shops, tavernas, cafes and restaurants as well as boats for hire. There are many beaches from which to choose within a 10 min drive including Piso Giala, Paraporti, Syneti and further on the stunning Achla. Guests can also explore mountain villages such as Stenies nearby and the spectacular Pithara Waterfalls.

Villa Lucia is a fantastic choice for guests who want to experience one of the more authentic islands of Greece combining tradition, nature, tranquillity and that certain Bohemian artistic touch.
